Penultimate® has been the best-selling handwriting app for iPad since the launch of the platform. Since its introduction in April of 2010, Penultimate has enjoyed consistently excellent reviews from print and online journalists, and maintains a minimum four-star average rating by users on iTunes. The app has spent over three weeks at the #1 overall paid apps chart position in the US, and has hit #1 in several other countries as well. It has spent most of the rest of the time in the top 10 apps chart, and was featured in Apple's iTunes Rewind in both 2010 and 2011.

Penultimate is an essential app for iPad. It's both functional and stylish, replacing paper with an instantly usable canvas in the tablet form factor. Cocoa Box's pioneering ink technology is consistently described as the most impressive on the platform, and Penultimate has been the first to market with several key features: automatic Wrist Protection for preventing stray marks from users' palms, native handwriting format import/export, and a magic eraser that's always the right size. In the last year, Penultimate has added significant enhancements that broaden the potential uses for the app: the ability to import images as photorealistic paper styles, an in-app Paper Shop for the download of a variety additional collections of paper styles, and picture import. These features, combined with the powerful organization and editing tools in the app, allow Penultimate to turn into domain-specific notes software for organization, cataloging, music, design, scrapbooking, and anything else the user needs. The most recent release, version 3.3, added high-quality integration with the popular Dropbox third-party web service—allowing users to share, import, and backup automatically—as well as with Evernote, a service with best-in-class handwriting recognition and note organization.

Penultimate was fully acquired in May 2012 by Evernote, which will allow more rapid improvements to the app, deeper integration with Evernote's powerful handwriting recognition technology, and Penultimate's appearance on other platforms.

Cocoa Box is a small studio making high-quality software, located in sunny (sometimes) San Francisco, California.
